Santorini is one of those places where you step into the postcard—whitewashed villages, volcanic cliffs, and sunsets so perfect they feel staged. But what exactly should you add to your trip itinerary? Read below to find out.

After spending four days on Santorini back in October, I have curated this list for how to best spend your time exploring the island (including things I wish I had done). This island has an excursion for everyone—hiking, tanning, donkey riding, or volcano climbing—you will find your fun!
Hike from Fira to Oia
Duration: 4 hours
For the best views Santorini, embark on the hike that runs from Fira to Oia. You'll pass through the charming villages of Firostefani and Imerovigli, with sweeping caldera views along the way. The distance one-way is about 6.5 miles.

Pack sunscreen, water, and a camera—you might just meet some hiking pals on the trail by taking their photo for them, like I did! Start your hike in time to finish in Oia for the sunset.
If time is of the essence, or you are hiked out for the day, consider taking the bus back to your accommodation (if needed). The buses cost around €2.00 in cash only (cost dependent on final destination). Reference here for the bus schedules, and find the bus stop here in Oia.

Watch the Sunset Over Oia
Duration: 1-2 hours
After finishing your hike or your dinner, you have to set aside time to watch the sunset over Oia. Try dining at one of the restaurants with a view to observe the sun dip below the horizon. After my hike, I dined with my hiking buddy (s/o Natalie!) at a spot in the bay called Sunset by Paraskevas.
This is perhaps the most beautiful sunset you will ever see in your life, and it is known. Because of this sunset's popularity, arrive early to secure a good spot for viewing.

Beach-Hop: Red, White, and Black Sand Beaches
Duration: 3-4 hours
Santorini's beaches are not the most traditional of beaches, as they are volcanic. Both the white and red sand beach are rockier, with the red color coming from the volcanic clay. The white sand beach is accessible by boat via tour.
If you want an adventure, wander over the hills to the rare red sand beach. If you want relaxtion, head to the black sand beach (a softer sand) where you can lounge at a beach bar.
At the black sand beach, reserve a covered lounge chair at one of the clubs by simply purchasing an item from its attached restaurant. The popular spots are Perissa or Kamari.

Volcano + Hot Springs Excursion
Duration: 4 hours
Book a half-day tour to hike the crater of Nea Kameni (yes, it is an active volcano!) and to take a dip in the nearby hot springs. Board one of the pirate ship sailboats near Fira set out on your excursion.
The sulfur-rich water at the hot springs is said to have healing properties, but fair warning, any white on your suit will shortly stain red from the clay. On top of that, getting to the springs means jumping in the open ocean and swimming several yards to the shore. Also, "hot" springs is a bit exaggerated—I'd give them lukewarm at best—but it is an adventure!
Sunset Catamaran Cruise
Duration: 5 hours
Another boat excursion offered on the island is the classic catamaran cruise. If you want more elegance than adventure, then this would be a better option for you instead of the Volcano + Hot Springs Excursion.
The catamaran cruise will take you around the caldera, stopping at the hot springs, and adventuring out to the white sand beach (accessible by boat only). Many will also stop by the red and black sand beaches, also. Enjoy your sunset cruise all while being served bottomless beverages, classic greek dishes, and delightful views.

Wine Tasting + Pygros Excursion
Duration: 3-4 hours
Allot one of your afternoons for sipping crisp Assyrtiko wine at a scenic winery like Santo Wines. Afterwards, head to Pyrgos—the highest village on the island—to explore castle ruins, quaint shops, and quiet charm.
This is one of the activities that I opted out of during my time on the island, but according to my friends, this excursion had some of the most beautiful views on the island, offering the perfect restful retreat.

ATV + Donkey Rides
Duration: Varies
If you are looking to add adventure to your itinerary, then there are several ways to risk a ride on both donkeys and ATVs on the island.
During either your Santorini Sunset at Oia or during the Volcano + Hot Springs Excursion, you will find donkeys stationed at the bay. Because of how steep Santorini's hillsides can be, donkey rides are offered in the areas where travelers are treking up and down from hilltop to seaside. You can pay for your donkey ride onsite—no need to plan in advance.

If you want to go ATV riding, then you will need to book your rental at one of the many spots across the island. Do your research depending on your accommodation location, but most ATV rentals should cost around 30-50 euro for the day.

Nightlife: Enigma + Murphy's
Duration: Varies
To elevate the energy, plan to spend a night out in the town of Fira. Head for a local pub vibe at Murphy's before hitting the dance floor at Enigma. European nightlife both starts and ends later, so plan a power nap before the bars get bouncing around midnight.
Final Thoughts
Whether you're climbing the caldera, sipping wine seaside, or dancing until dawn, Santorini offers a balanced blend of adventure, relaxation, and iconic imagery. After four days on island, I can confirm: it's almost so magical it's make-believe.
I hope I've helped you navigate this dream destination, and that a few of my insights inspire your own vacation far away!
